PLE Principal Update
March 1, 2022
Dear PHamily,
We hope everyone had a fabulous mid-winter break. We closed the month of February with gratitude and joy.
We celebrated 100 days of school, 2nd grade teachers had an amazing once-in-a-lifetime special school day this year. They called the day Two’s Day! The date was February 2, 2022, or 2/2/22! Twos all around! Our PLE second grade team found engaging ways to celebrate Two’s Day with students in 2022 and beyond including Tootsie Roll and Double Bubble treats, wore tu-tu’s, 22 different 22 second challenges, decorating 22 circles.
We celebrated Happy Appreciation Counselor Week! The Phamily thanks our school counselor, Alysia Carey for all she does for PLE students. We also had our first in-person principal coffee. We had a great parental community joining in the conversation.
We also are very grateful that Lighthouse continues to celebrate the amazing work of our educators. They donated a delicious lunch for all our staff. We also received a very generous donation of $12,239.50 ($1,239.50 to PTA). We are so excited that they will start using our gym to provide service on Sundays later this spring.
In partnership,
Dr. Macias, PLE Principal
This month we are highlighting our Kindergarten students
Our students in Kindergarten celebrated their 100 days of school on February 16. The Kindergarten team had lots of activities, over the course of day 1 to day 100, to reinforce our number system based on 10:
- During Morning Meetings, counting up to the 100th day of school from day 1 by discussing what # each day. Writing the number (with the student’s help). Building number sense.
- Counting chorally each day to the number they have reached so far.
- Using addition to figure out how many more days till 100 is reached (i.e. today is day 97, how many more days till 100?)
- Counting orally to 100 in different ways: by 1’s, 5’s, and decade numbers (10s)
- Using 5/10 frames to aid in counting objects. Sending the 5/10 frames and bags home to support students’ counting of 100 objects.
- Counting 100 items in class, showing various ways to count/organize them with/out counting mats (i.e. groups of 5/10); inviting families to share in the fun and helping their child to collect 100 items.
- Weaving literacy into the activities with stories, songs, movement breaks.
- Making ‘100 Day’ crowns to celebrate the ‘one-der-ful day’!
Virtue of the Month
In March we will be recognizing responsibility as our virtue of the month. Responsibility means that you take care of yourself, your actions, and make amends when you make a mistake. Responsibility means others can count on you to do the right thing. To understand the importance of responsibility, consider reading "Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse", a story of a mouse who learns lessons about the importance of handling strong emotions and taking responsibility for your actions.
