This is the 25th anniversary year of the first women's fight held at Madison Square Garden, where Christy won an eight-round unanimous decision over Isra Girgrah on August 23, 1997. And as fight week begins for Saturday's historic Taylor-Serrano championship fight at the Mecca of Boxing, Rowman & Littlefield Publishers announced today the release date for Fighting For Survival: My Journey Through Boxing Fame, Abuse, Murder, and Resurrection, Christy's eagerly-awaited memoir. Available for pre-order at many major book retailers, including Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and Amazon UK, Christy's memoir will be released on Wednesday, June 8 -- four days before she and co-author Ron Borges are inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. "True fighters understand that the history of the Garden is unmatched. Since 1925, nearly every great boxer has fought there, and everyone who hoped to be great was striving to get there too. No woman ever had. Isra and I became the first women to tangle in a boxing bout in the most storied arena in the sport," said Christy. "Katie and Amanda are taking it to the next level. I am so proud of them. I won't make a prediction on who will win since they each have won the BWAA's Christy Martin Award as the Female Fighter of the Year, but I do predict their fight will be memorable. That's why I will be at The Garden on Saturday rooting for them both." Fighting For Survival goes way beyond the 49 victories she earned inside the ring. It also deals with the victories she earned outside the ring, in fights for which no amount of gym training can prepare you. The book's first chapter opens with Christy's brutal retelling of being left for dead on the floor of the bedroom she shared with her then-husband and trainer, after he had stabbed her multiple times with a buck knife and shot her from point blank range, the culmination of an abusive marriage. Fighting For Survival is a brave and clear-eyed view of a career that inspired female fighters across the globe. But it is more than that. It is her story of survival and perseverance. Christy grew up in a small West Virginia coal mining town, unable to express her true sexual identity for fear of rejection by her family and her community. While earning millions of dollars inside the ring, she had to overcome drug addiction, survive domestic abuse (her ex husband and trainer/manager Jim Martin is serving the minimum 25-year sentence for second-degree attempted murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon on Christy) and recover from a stroke that struck her while on the operating table. Christy is now an advocate for domestic abuse victims as well as a boxing promoter.
