Following last fall’s Chicago Parks touring production, “Fannie Lou Hamer, Speak On It!”, Goodman Theatre will return to this summer with a presentation of Sones de México Ensemble’s “Zulema,” running Aug. 5-21 with a final performance scheduled Sept. 2.

“Zulema” is written by local playwright Dolores Díaz, music directed by Sones de México Ensemble founder Victor Pichardo and co-directed by Goodman’s resident artistic associate Henry Godinez and Marcela Muñoz, Aguijon Theater’s co-artistic director.

In the story, set thousands of miles from her home in Chiapas, Mexico, Zulema goes on a musical journey to Chicago.

This upcoming free touring performance will take place in 10 citywide parks and is produced alongside Chicago Park District’s Night Out in the Parks, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), Chicago Latino Theater Alliance (CLATA) and the National Museum of Mexican Art. “Zulema” is slated to run one hour with no intermission. In addition, a special finale performance with a cast of over 70 artists will conclude the run, location and details will be announced at a later date.

Co-director Godinez said in a statement that “Zulema” is a “magical and moving story of a young girl’s courageous journey to her new home in Chicago. It’s in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Sones de México’s own journey — from their musical roots in México to our great city of Chicago.”
