General Operating Support in Times of Crisis

The Veatch Program is committed to general support grants — meaning grantees can spend their Veatch grants as they deem necessary. We conduct this work, moreover, via deep, long-term relationships. These best practices are serving as a crucial anchor during the unfolding of the COVID-19 pandemic as we continue our commitment to amplifying UU values, including those of democracy, human dignity and self-determination through our work.

Truly, this is a time of crisis by which we are all impacted. At the same time, we continue to learn of the very particular impact in low-income communities, communities of color, and among immigrants and workers, all across the country. The breadth and approach of the Veatch Program — providing flexible, general support throughout the U.S. and to core denominational entities, is putting the congregation’s faith into action every day. The ways in which we are supporting grantees are now life-sustaining — helping create community-based hubs that, in addition to fighting for equity, are making a critical difference in this moment.

As one example of many: several of our grantees have established special funds for their members, such as restaurant or domestic workers, who are now unemployed. Veatch's general support over many years has helped provide these groups with the capacity needed to establish such funds and distribute them where they are most needed.

We will continue to use these updates as a way to share information on the incredible and essential work of over 180 grantees across the country. If you would prefer not to receive these updates, you can simply hit the "unsubscribe" button at the bottom of this email.

I hope you are inspired by the updates and resources we've gathered from grantees this week.

Liberty Hill —  Fighting for Housing Justice

This past Monday, Liberty Hill — a Veatch grantee that that regrants to community based organizations in the Los Angeles area — held its first virtual town hall focused on housing justice. The forum features Ruby Gordillo, who shares her moving experience with being under-housed in the midst of a pandemic. Ruby helped start the Reclaiming Our Homes project, which is seeking to reclaim vacant city and state owned properties for homeless and under-housed people, an effort that's taken on increased importance in recent months. Watch the entire event, hosted by the group's CEO Shane Murphy Goldsmith, here

Community Voices Heard — Tackling Food Insecurity in New York's Public Housing

Community Voices Heard — a New York-based group working to empower low-income communities of color — is ensuring the needs of public housing residents are being met throughout the pandemic. CVH has partnered with Chef Jose Andres’ World Central Kitchen to have over 500 meals delivered to public housing residents in East Harlem. CVH has also worked with Black and brown owned restaurants to facilitate the delivery of 350 meals to people in Yonkers, including 250 to those who have been working as home health aides, and are preparing to deliver 100 meals to residents in Newburgh. The group has also started updating a COVID-19 resources map on its website with other resources for those facing food insecurity during the pandemic.

PRRI — Research From a Faith Perspective

Veatch grantee PRRI (Public Religion Research Institute) — a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to conducting independent research at the intersection of religion, culture, and public policy — is conducting research and providing insights on the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, among many other issues, from a faith perspective. A survey from 2018 focused on the gig economy has taken on new meaning in the current global context, for instance. The study, focused on working Californians, analyzed how residents are living and working pre-coronavirus, and provides a snapshot of how workers in other states in America might be grappling with the same obstacles during the pandemic. Sign up here for the group's "Weekend Buzz" newsletter for their latest work.

Resource Generation — 'Share My Check' Campaign

Resource Generation — a Veatch grantee made up of young people committed to the equitable distribution of wealth — has launched a campaign to encourage people to redistribute all or part of their stimulus check from the recent $2 trillion aid package passed by Congress to grassroots movement building organizations. Read more about the campaign on this one pager, which also links through to a form to fill out if if you'd like to participate, or know others who might. The campaign will be using the social media hashtag #ShareMyCheck online.

National Domestic Workers United — Caring Through Coronavirus

National Domestic Workers United — a Veatch grantee with over 60 affiliates nationwide — has stepped up its response to meet the needs of its membership with its "Caring Through Coronavirus" effort. To date, the group has: raised $5.8 million for direct support to 20,000 domestic workers; launched COVID-Ready Caregiver Certification to offer mobile-based training for long-term care workers during the coronavirus pandemic; and launched a weekly webinar series for members, the first of which reached over 2,500 workers.

The group is also prioritizing highlighting first person accounts of immigrant workers in the media, who continue to provide essential services through the crisis. You can read several examples below:
