You Are Taking Over the Class

The best way to learn about children's literature is to teach children's literature. Given we do not have an elementary classroom we will do the next best thing and teach each other about the wonderful possibilities stories bring to the classroom.

I will model this week with the poetry module. I will also provide easy to use templates for each group.

Each group must:

  • Find two readings from a professional journal.
  • Provide a writing prompt as a response to the readings.
  • Include a slideshow or video that:
    • Defines the genre
    • Explains the benefits of, or reasons for, teaching the genre
    • Includes strategies for teaching students to read and teach the genre
  • An activity for people to complete.
  • An optional video podcast with me to wrap up the module.

I will be posting the templates and the groups on Thursday. Next week we will do a case study and you will develop your modules

In this module we will examine the power poetry as a tool to paint wiht words.

  • What are some classical poems to share with children?
  • What are some strategies we can use to teach children to read and write poetry?

Through reading, writing , and participating as a class we will explore these questions.
