Sausage Strips Gain Best New Product Status

Johnsonville’s Sausage Strips Voted the Best New Breakfast Meat by Consumers

SHEBOYGAN FALLS, Wis.— In market just 9 months, the Johnsonville Sausage Strips received the 2021 Best New Product Award in the breakfast meat category, according to BrandSpark International. The winners were determined based on a national survey of 14,584 U.S. shoppers and announced Feb. 25.

The Best New Products Awards is in its 13th year, with the winning products determined solely by the votes and opinions of American consumers. Winning products will be featured in Newsweek magazine and ShopperArmy.com, a website devoted to help shoppers discover new and noteworthy consumer products.

Winners were determined based on consumer appeal among category shoppers, repurchase intent and product superiority ratings among real product purchasers. Winners were determined among selected products by the highest numerical scores in each category, and not necessarily on statistical significance. The 2021 Best New Product Awards List is here.

Johnsonville’s launched its line of Sausage Strips in spring 2020 at Midwest retailers. Offered in four different flavors (Original, Spicy, Maple Flavored and Chorizo), this new product looks and cooks like bacon, but it’s smoked sausage! Sausage Strips are fully cooked, made with premium cuts of pork and no MSG. Each 12 oz. package contains approximately 12 strips, with a suggested retail price of $4.99. Sausage Strips are rolling out nationally starting spring 2021.

“Ultimately, Sausage Strips were made to add something flavorful and exciting not only to breakfast, but also to sandwiches, burgers, or whatever else consumers can dream up,” said Steve Bembenista, senior innovation manager with Johnsonville.

Because the Sausage Strips are fully cooked, preparing this breakfast meat is quick and convenient, in a variety of cooking methods, and the time depends on how crispy the user prefers. In a skillet by stovetop takes just 3-5 minutes; baked in an oven (at 450 degrees) takes 12-15 minutes; microwave is 1-2 minutes; and by air fryer (at 400 degrees) for 5-6 minutes.

Key product features:

  • Great protein option, available in four different flavors
  • More meat per strip since the sausage doesn’t shrink like bacon when cooked
  • Lower sodium than bacon (per gram serving size)
  • Versatile to use along with eggs, a flavor enhancer to sandwiches or salads, as a garnish to cocktails or seafood dishes
