Online: Big Trees in the City

Description:  We know that large trees in the urban environment provide the most in ecosystem services; whether it is carbon sequestration, pollution removal, stormwater mitigation, or cooling the ambient temperature. For years we have been able to quantify this using the i-Tree suite of tools. www.itreetools.org.

The real challenge is getting big trees to thrive and attain their biological potential in the heavily built up urbanized environment. These challenging conditions can be found in large cities but also in the commercial centers of small towns and villages.

In this talk we will go back a couple decades and discuss what was done in Ithaca, NY to plan and engineer for trees and we will take a look at the results today. Methods to help trees to thrive such as daylighting paved areas, using engineered soils, and selecting cultivars to match the site will be explored.

Andy Hillman is a senior consulting urban forester and a business developer for Davey Resource Group. He has 34 years of experience in urban forestry management. Prior to joining DRG, he was the city forester for Ithaca. Before moving to Ithaca, he managed the urban forestry program for the City of Oswego. Mr. Hillman served for many years on the ANSI A300 Committee, which develops the national tree care performance standards. He is an International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist/Municipal Specialist and holds the ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification. He is a New Hampshire Certified Arborist and a New Jersey Licensed Tree Expert. Mr. Hillman is an Award of Merit recipient, Honorary Life Member, and past president of the Society of Municipal Arborists. He is also a founding instructor at the SMA’s Municipal Forestry Institute. Mr. Hillman is a current Board of Directors member and a past president of the New York State Urban Forestry Council. He currently chairs the council’s Quick Start Grant Committee. He is a member of the Town of Ulysses, NY Sustainability and Conservation Advisory Committee, Climate Smart Community Task Force, and Board of Zoning Appeals. Following graduation from SUNY Oswego with a degree in biology, Mr. Hillman served honorably as a Commissioned Officer in the United States Naval Reserve.
