Things are never what they seem; especially in police work.

John Testarossa is an LAPD cop with an NYPD attitude who has seen it all. The dead, the dying and the decomposing are all in a day’s work for the red-headed Italian from Brooklyn.

After an arm rolls up on a Santa Monica beach, and the dead body to which the arm was once attached is discovered, John and his partner, Alex Ortiz, enter the world of college sports, athletes, and the illegal drugs that enhance their performance.

Rage and revenge come together in a toxic cocktail John is all too familiar with. It defined him as a young boy, and ultimately still does as a man. He carries a dark secret.

It is in the beautiful Dr. Karen Gennaro—who has a few secrets of her own— that John finds a soft place to land. Even as he knows all too well what falling in love with a cop can do to a woman.

What sustains this hard-boiled detective is the bond he shares with his brave and dedicated partners. When that bond is destroyed in a senseless act of violence, will his past, and a desire for vengeance, destroy him?

From Los Angeles, where Venice Beach, Marina del Rey, and the dream of Abbot Kinney’s Venice Canals paint a picture of bliss, Testarossa will take you on a deeper, darker journey.

I fell hard for John and this amazing story.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I don’t think I was more than a few chapters in and I realized this book is going to be something special. The main character John Testarossa is a fabulous character.
We get to know quite a bit about him and what drives him in his career – family, friends, the job, and even his love life. Each piece creates a driven, intense, conflicted, fun loving, romantic man.
And I totally fell for him. I absolutely love this character.
The author did a fabulous job with the story. Lots of action, unique crimes, and a great look at an active police detective all of the nuances that entails. Highly detailed descriptions that put you right into the action really make a huge difference in this crime drama.
I loved John’s tight-knit relationship with his coworkers. They really are a family along with all of the snark, love, and respect that is wonderfully obvious.
His relationship with Karen is a delicate blossoming affair that has its ups and downs. John is not without its issues but he is upfront and has his limits. I love the two of them together and I hope that future stories will continue this delicate connection.
Overall, like I said, one of my favorite stories of the year. I can see this character becoming a long-running series of books very easily.
Cary has come from out of nowhere to make a huge splash with this series. An impactful, intense blend of police action, crime, love, the past, the present, and the future.
Sign me up for more. I cannot wait to the next installment. A big publisher needs to seriously grab this author and series!
What a very intriguing book this is. So many facets that grabbed me and pulled me in.
Story 1, father and son. How that relationship maketh the man. John Testarossa only son of an only son. A red headed Italian (me thinks someone bedded an Irishman/woman). A walk to school. A breakfast in a deli. A life changed. I want to hug that guy.
Story 2 a young man robbed of his life. John is good cop. A really, really good cop. The type who feels. The type who senses. The type who is honest and loyal. He’s a mans’ man. Great partner. Great friend. I am in awe of him. I want to know that guy.
Story 3 the compassionate man. He knows the pain of others and can empathise. The touch of a hand or a shoulder. The sympathetic smile. I want the comfort of that guy.
Story 4 the lover man. I can’t remember reading a book recently where a character called Karen is a normal woman and not a psycho mentalist. Hurray for all the lovely Karens of this world! Karen Gennaro, sexy Lady Blue falls for our guy. Cop and doctor could be a match made in heaven or hell. I want to be that Karen.
I haven’t even gone into the crime solving; the way he reveres his colleagues who deserve it and calls out the ones who don’t. Johnny is such a great character. I’ve read some books where there is no continuity in the way a character behaves. Not this one. Solid guy. I want to be his friend.
Great plot. Brilliant writing. Very impressed by this author.
An absolutely fascinating book that will capture you, pull you in and hold your attention all the way through. To say that there is mystery surrounding the "who dun-it" in this story is an understatement and one that keeps you turning page after page as your mind works over time trying to figure out who the murderer is before the detectives themselves.
The characters are so very well written and well defined, and one in particular is a bit complex. Detective John Testarossa is a man with a hard past. He was raised in a loving family with a father who was a police officer himself. John as a boy adored and idolized his father, until his father's sins knocked him off of the pedestal his son placed him on. But that did not stop the boy from loving his father, or feeling the deepest pain of losing that father in a brutal way. A pain that grew into vengeance for the person that took his father from him. A pain that remains with him along with a sin that continues to haunt his dreams as well as his daily life. He is a good man, a good cop and really good at that job. He has friends and he has his partner and his family that he loves very much. He himself is unattached, but his partner's family is like his own and he would do anything for any of them. It isn't until one of his brothers in blue is shot in the line of duty that he meets a woman that makes his world stand still. It isn't until he is visiting with him that he gets to meet her. It isn't until a little while later that he tracks her down and asks her out. She's beautiful, smart and is the doctor that saved his brother in blue's life.
To say that the relationship between John and Dr. Karen Gennaro is one of hearts and flowers would be wrong. What you get is real. What you get is a man and woman who are on opposite ends of the life spectrum. He's a cop from a cops family. She's a doctor, from money. He's more beer, whiskey and scotch; she's more wine and champagne. But together, they find that they have some things in common, although not exactly the same. They both try to save lives, although sometimes John as to be the one to take a life - and has in his line of work. But the secrets they both harbor could very well end them before they really get started. Their hearts are involved and John's sense of loyalty and honor are pushed to the limits when her's enters into the picture. His past surfaces and he sees that they will not, no, he cannot be what she needs or deserves. He can't bring a woman into his life when at any time he could cause her more pain if his job takes his life. He pushes her away.
What I loved most about this book is the way the author took their story, brought you through everything with them and their love; into their bed and didn't get lost in writing detailed sex scenes. He brought you through these scenes gracefully and beautifully without all of the intensity of detailing the scene. I also loved how he brought out your emotions by bringing you through a funeral of a fallen officer from the very beginning until the finality of the burial. Walking you through the funeral procession, through the funeral and the scene at the graveyard itself. You could almost see yourself standing among the mourners watching everything, feeling everything.
I have to say I have not enjoyed this type of book in a very long time. It puts you right out in front of everything that the detectives and the police officers do as they work a scene, as they work a case. It brings you into the bar that they go to when they are off duty, it bring to you the kind of cops they are, what they hold as important to them as police officers and it shows you that while not all cops are bad, that there are some and that the good ones know and despise the ones that aren't, and attempt to hold them accountable for their actions.
I will not say that this is one hot read because it's not, not in that way. It is hot if you like a book that will capture your attention, have you use your mind to work out what is going on and try to solve the case right along with the characters. It is if you enjoy a romantic scene for just what it is; romantic and real. It is if you can relate to the characters, if you can feel their pain, their joy and their devotion to their friends and colleagues. If these things make a book hot to you then this book is smoldering hot and I cannot recommend it highly enough. If I could give this book higher than a 5 Star, I would give it a 20! Outstanding read and I cannot wait to see where the next book takes Detective John Testarossa!
I'm very impressed with J.D. Cary's writing style, especially since it's the first book, and what a story it was! John Testarossa is an LAPD detective, who's originally from Brooklyn, so that whole NYPD stereotype comes out quite often, though he's on the west coast these days. He & his partner, Alex Ortiz have a new case when a mysterious arm pops up on the Santa Monica Beach, without the body attached to it. But just wait, the body is coming, and it leads John & his partner to the complex world of college sports, the athletes, and the illegal enhancement drugs that flood that scene like crazy. Luckily, John is a man with a harsh past, as he grew up idolizing his father, who was also a cop, until crap hit the fan, and John's father's sins were revealed, leading to his father being taken from him, as little John didn't care that his father messed up, he still loved him more than anyone in the world. He then grew up wanting revenge every step of the way, all the way to the present time in his life. And despite that darkness from his past he carries around, he's a good man, cop, and great at his job. Now, in the midst of this case, one of the boys in blue got shot, and this is when he met Dr. Karen Gennaro, who knocked his world off it's axis, and he decides to ask her out, but he had to track her down to actually do so. There's some of the elements leading up to the here & now which is packed full of all kinds of amazing goodness. You have the mystery circumstances of his newest case, which also provides the twists to allow for f-bomb dropping that makes my life super fun. Then there's that element of romance after he meets Dr. Karen. I wasn't sure how much was actually going to be present & I was pleasantly surprised. The story comes off realistic in all aspects, as no one is perfect, but they have flaws like humans do, and I really liked it. The author did a fantastic job putting it all together where too much angst/drama came through the romantic aspect. Plus I'm truly a fiend when it comes to mystery/suspense in a story, and Testarossa had it in spades. So if you want to know how it all pans out, to find out who dun it, then you know what to do, one click this new series right away, as you won't be sorry. HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!
This is the first book that I have read from J.D. I am glad that I decided to give this book a chance. I was looking for a book with a little mystery and found it in this one. John Testarossa is a detective. Him and his partner get a case. It all starts with a human arm. Nothing but the arm. Slowly and surely as they start to work through the case they build on what is going on . That is when the book becomes gripping and has you hooked. You are going on a ride with these two trying to figure out who commit the crime and who all the players are. Along the way John tries for a relationship. Will he be able to maintain one? What will happen with the case? I loved this one. I am so glad that I took a chance on this writer and decided to read this one. I cant wait to read the next one and see what happens.
Loved this book! Top notch police procedural that’s terrifically writing with a thrilling storyline that includes a dead college kid, illegal drugs, flying bullets and a lovely romance to boot. It’s an emotional ringer during a few parts that hurt my heart and sprung a few tears. Great murder mystery with hunky cops and lots of bad guys. John and his partner Alex are a hoot along with the rest of the cop crew friends and fantastic camaraderie. And then there’s the lovely Dr. Gennaro. The romance between her and John is fabulous. John was smitten almost to the point of a 40+ hot cop reverting to a teen. Cute! But he mans up and ooh he’s sizzles! Great couple. This one kept me guessing till the end about several elements. JD is on my to-read list after this outstanding story! So many great characters for a sequel. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC.
Wow what a book it all starts when an arm washes up on shore and from there it's a race to not only find the body the arm belongs to but the person who was the killer.
Testarossa is a Detective for the Lapd and racing against the clock to find out what happened and why. Can Testarossa and his partner find out what happened or will it become another cold case?
An amazing book lots of twists and turns had me guessing throughout the whole book! I can't wait to see what the next one has in store!
Cary has completely amazed me with this book. It is emotional, suspenseful, written flawlessly, and an overall amazing read!! They have included all elements that suck you in in a romance suspense book. I was sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to see what was going to happen next. It was a read I won’t forget anytime soon.
Cops are hard and scary to love. John knows this. But sometimes love doesn’t care what you know. This story is gripping, emotional and all around one amazing story you need to experience on your own!!
You either enjoy this book or you don’t. I’m not sure there’s too much middle ground. I’ve read it three times. John Testarossa is a New York cop who has moved to LA. He’s a cop through and through. He works homicide and he’s come across a gruesome discovery. He finds that college is not what it’s cracked up to be. Lots of bad things go on with young people. A young man shoved under a bridge dead. JT and his fellow cops have to work through a college athlete system to see if they can find out what happened to this young man.
There is another story running through this about his childhood in New York. It gives you so much information about his background without interfering with the current story at all.
He meets a doctor and falls for her but he’s such a difficult person she nearly gives up on him. At the end of the book you have hopes for the relationship and you are glad he’s solved the mystery.
I tried to get several of my friends to read this but they never finished it. It was a great read but very explicit about dead bodies. It is a book about murder and how cops solve them. The main character is John Testarossa who left NY but has never gotten the death of his father, another cop, resolved. The book goes back and forth from his career, his love interest, and how his father died. I enjoyed every word and have read it three ties
Very Good Read
Well written with lots of twists & turns, strong characters you want to learn more about. It does lag in a couple places and the going back to the past gets a little confusing. Still a very good read..
Ticking cops
I am not, or have been a fan about books about cops or their behaviors. The US has learned toward a crime and punishment mentality, which gives me great pause. Seems we celebrate violence and will not adjust the laws in favor of protecting our kids or people. Everyone has to have a gun but school teachers live on the edge of poverty. I am not a fan of sanctioning punishment and rewarding bad behavior.
There is an audience for this genre. It just isn't me.
4 1/2 star read by J.D Cary. John Testarossa is a cop for the LAPD and finds himself with a puzzling murder to solve when an arm washes up in the beach. A few days later a body is found under a bridge with a missing arm which they discover belongs to their missing arm. So they now have a mystery to solve how the man got murdered and separated from his arm.
It turns out the body belongs to a missing college student now John has to solve the mystery of how a missing college student turns up dead in such a manner. Along the way more mystery and intrigue rears it’s head as more bodies turn up. Will John and his colleagues manage to solve the crime before any more bodies turn up. I received a copy (thank you) to do an honest review for Naughty Nightie Book Blog.
While he’s trying to solve the crime Doctor Karen Gennaro crosses his path and he really likes her and finally plucks up the courage to ask her out in a date. John falls for her, will she be the one he ends up with. I enjoyed this book as it flowed well and you got to know the characters and really felt for them at times. I look forward to reading more from J.D Cary and hear more about John Testarossa.
This novel was a bit of a disappointment to me. The reviews are just stellar so I was expecting an enjoyable read. Not so. I found there was just too much going on and too much jumping around. There were times where I had no idea what the author was talking about. The main character was likable enough but his relationship with his love interest made me dislike him. First of all they moved way too quickly into an intense relationship. Or maybe not as one of the things I disliked about the book was that it was hard to know how much time had passed. So what seemed to me to have been a short time later, may have been a couple months later because that's how the couple acted. It felt unrealistic. The murder mystery started out good and kept my interest but then got very sloppy and finally just felt like it was concluded in a rush and almost like an afterthought. I believe this is the authors first novel and it wasn't bad for a first so I may give this author another chance but I feel like the reviews are not genuine and I wanted others to know this is not a 5 star read so don't go into reading this book expecting that.
I'm going to be honest here and say that I found Testarossa a bit slow at the beginning. I had a hard time connecting with John. But please finish reading this before you decide.......The more I read the more I was just pulled into Testarossa. It took a little bit but once I got into John's head and in the mind of crime-solving I was hooked. I loved this book. You get a lot of background on John throughout this read that helps you in the understanding of who John is and how he works his cases. I love that we get a slight romance with this one with the good Doctor Karen. I'm so intrigued by John and Karen that I can't wait to see how the series goes on and their relationship unfolds. John is a brilliant detective and has this amazing group of coworkers. Even though I struggled a little at the beginning of this book I am so glad I didn't give up. I can't wait for more of John Testarossa to come. Go one-click this one for all you crime-solving fans out there.
Having never read a police book before this was a new experience for me.
To start with I found it a little bit slow and hard to remember all of the police characters, but the more I read the more I liked it.
John Testarossa is a nice guy and a great cop, him and his partner Alex are a great team and their chats bounce off each other seemlessly.
John is never off duty, even when he is and his comradery between his fellow work mates either working together to solve a case or kicking back at his house for a beer and a bbq shows his true character.
This book has alot to keep you invested in the story, the back story of John and his father, the attraction between him and Docter Karen and of course all the twists and turns in trying to solve a murder.
Looking forward to reading more about the police world.
One of the most brilliantly detailed police murder mysteries I've ever read. The case details are so vivid and gruesome. You learn quickly the John Testarossa really has his work cut out for him and some.
John suffered a horrific lose at a young age that sculpted him into becoming a cop. He's a very good one too. Case after case, his work is never done. After a case sends him briefly to the ER, he meets Dr. Karen. You can tell there's an immediate attraction but you are left wondering how can he balance a relationship and his caseload? Let me just tell you, somehow he does!!
I loved this book, the details were fantastic and set the story apart from other police murder mysteries. You will find your self wondering, "Who did it?", throughout the story. This story certainly had a lot to keep your attention and those pages turning. I can't wait to see where this series is headed to.
Loved
John, a hard man to love but a man who I think deserves it. He's loyal and has integrity. The people he calls his friends are his family and he will do anything for them, which makes him a good detective. But he has demons which keeps him from truly receiving the love he deserves. But maybe Karen will be the one. This book was a good read for me. The way these detectives are relentless to find justice for the dead, makes you love them. I can't wait for more.
