The Newlyweds is actually the sequel to Cake. You technically don't have to read The Theory of Second Best or Fiercely Emma before jumping into this installment, but you definitely need to read the first book.

One reoccurring question that keeps popping into my brain when trying to review this book is: Was this book really necessary? In my honest opinion, it really wasn't. Don't get me wrong - it was awesome to see Jake and Casey tie the knot, visit with the McKallister gang, and catch all of J. Bengtsson's geeky references but I felt like this book was an explosion of unnecessary stuff. On the other hand, we did get to see Jake finish his healing process. Of course Bengtsson did it in a way that left me haunted and satisfied. That alone was enough to make this book worth reading.

As much as I would love to dive into more details, I can't because of spoilers. Just know that I am in no way trying to discourage anyone from picking this up, because Bengtsson's writing is wonderful, but know that you will definitely be shocked at all the happenings.

I had great apprehension about reading Cake: The Newlyweds despite the fact that I loved the first book in this series where Jake and Casey met and fell in love. I always worry when authors do a follow up to a book where the couple was left in a good place because I am very much a lover of happily ever after and I know when there is a follow up book that means something goes wrong and given the hero’s past, this made me extremely nervous. So, I have to give credit where credit is due…J. Bengtsson took this couple who had already weathered so much in their time together and made them stronger. Yes, there were some issues they had to deal with and it wasn’t always pretty, they struggled, but they never gave up and remained devoted to one another even in the darkest of times.

During this book we see Jake and Casey get married, go on their honeymoon, return to work, and go through some big changes in their lives. There are moments of hilarity, there are moments of craziness, there are moments of fun, there are moments of grief, and there are moments of revelation and through all of these moments this couple continue to grow not only in the love they have for one another, but as the individuals they’ve always been. I laughed, I sighed, and I wept with them, and this people, is what life and love is like. Couples will go through many ups and downs during the course of a marriage, so I applaud this author for showing that despite fame, life isn’t always perfect and this couple knows that more than most.

If you were worried about reading this book as I was, please don’t be. Cake: The Newlyweds shows a couple can go through some tough times, but in the end come out better and stronger and ready to take on the world.

This book highlights the afterward portion of married life of Jake and Casey.
Their struggles, New beginnings and closing the doors to his past.
It's a struggle for Jake, his dark windowless soul enveloped in dismal sadness and distress.
Casey is a shaft of life that's slowly sneaking in, and trying to chip away at the Crack.
But her efforts prove to be stressful and frustrating cause her shaft isn't lighting up all the corners of his heart yet.
This book is Jake's coming to senses and facing his demons. He has to empty his heart with ghosts of past to clean up and make way for new happiness to join his life.
Very poignant, very heartwarming story.
As usual Joe Arden and Andi Arndt are the king & Queen of narration!!
5 stars for maybe a future Enid

If you aren't familiar with this series - I'm here to inform you!! This is one of the best set of books I have read. I'm only halfway through and I already know it belongs in my top ten series of all time!!

It all starts with Book 1 - Cake. And must be read in order. The whole series revolves around Jake, a boy who was kidnapped and tortured at 12 years old, is 1 of 7 siblings, and then goes on to be a well known rockstar. He meets the love of his life Casey in book 1 and off goes their journey. Each book in the series is about another sibling, but will always slowly unravel what really happened before, during and after the kidnapping and how it all affects the family members. It is one of the most interesting and compelling series I have ever read!!!!

I read books 1, 2 and 3 a few months back but held off on continuing because of the release of Book 6 this month. Book 3 is a good place to take a break because book 4 picks up again with Jake and Casey and their wedding and all that is going on again with Jake and his healing. This book was good, it definitely has some lows and once agains unveils a huge piece of the Jake puzzle. I am so ready to dive in to the rest of the siblings and see where this ends up!!! Even though I think there is at least another book to be written!

An irresistible sequel to the love story between Casey and Jake that began in Cake: A Love Story released in 2016. Readers should read the first book before continuing with their life as newlyweds. Once again, readers will find a story packed full of laughter and heartbreaking surprises – but most of all love showing the resilience of the human spirit to overcome the odds. Otherwise, the other books in this series can be read as standalones – but I don’t think you’ll want to miss a single one.

So many wonderful moments: “Here comes the bride . . .” was fabulous but played second fiddle to the tooth fairy’s visit -- but Chuckee Cheese takes the cake with the top spot! A lotta laughs and love saved the day when tragedy struck the Caldwell family.

Through both books, Jake McKallister and Casey Caldwell have overcome many obstacles, suffered greatly and still met the tough times head-on to overcome so much. Their love story is haunting and magical -- everything a romance reader desires.

Beautiful epilogues from both Casey and Jake – ahh big kudos to an author who knows how to please with a triumphant full-closure and happily-ever-after!

J. Bengtsson delivers with another installment of the McKallister family...Jake and Casey...tying the knot! I just happen to fall upon CAKE as a suggested read and I devoured Jake and Casey and the Kyle and Kenzie and recently Emma and Finn. Jake has been through so much in his life...to say he is one lucky man to have found his soulmate in Casey is an understatement. She is kind, caring, funny and patient. In the beginning of The Newlyweds, I thought I was going to reach through my kindle and slap some sense into Jake! He was frustrating me, I knew he still hadn't fully dealt with his past and I was nervous for Casey. Life throws these two curveballs...serious curveballs...nothing tears, humor and family support can withstand. I hated for this book to end, I enjoy all these characters so much. So now, I not only want Keith, but I am kind of hoping Luke gets a story too! Well done J. Bengtsson!

Loved loved loved. This was an awesome return to Jake and Casey's story....including the wedding that did not disappoint('Assbutt' now has a permanent place in my insult bank. Thank you for that little gem).

I don't want to spoil it for anyone but just like the previous books, this one will have you laughing out loud one minute and close to tears the next. There was no shortage of Mckallister/Caldwell family shenanigans.

We get a nice little update on Kyle and Kenzi throughout the book but also just a little more of a glimpse into the lives of the other siblings.

This book was definitely worth the wait and I can't wait to see what's in store for the other siblings!

CAKE PERFECTION!
If you are like me and fell in love with Jake and Casey in CAKE and wanted more, you will absolutely love CAKE The Newlyweds! This fourth book in the series is a seamless continuation of CAKE!

While reading CAKE, we all hoped and rooted for mega-rockstar Jake to experience love and happiness with Casey especially after learning about the horrors he experienced when he was 13 and we were rewarded after many a heart stopping event with the engagement of Jake and Casey (yay)! In this book, we experience what happens after that swoon worthy event! CAKE The Newlyweds starts with a shock. Casey is in crisis and suffering in sadness and gloom and she is not the Casey we remember and we learn why as we dive into the book. We are then taken on a journey that starts right before their wedding. We experience their wedding, honeymoon and newlywed life. It is a rollercoaster journey for Jake, Casey and their families as they love, celebrate, face doubts, confront dark times and endure heartbreak in order to find happiness.

The way this author is able to blend the romance, humor, struggles and love between her characters is what makes this series so great! The banter between Casey and Jake and family is one of my favorite elements of the series and the humorous banter is back in full force. One of funniest scenes in this book is the fatherly advice given to Jake during his bachelor party featuring honeybees! The book continues to explore the darkness that still plagues Jake and a new heartbreaking event that will challenge all.

If you haven’t read CAKE A Love Story, you need to read it before this book. I would recommend reading books 2 and 3 in the CAKE Series (The Theory of Second Best and Fiercely Emma) because they are great reads too but also to fully understand Jake’s siblings and their stories as well as to gain a further understanding of Jake as well.

This book gives us everything we ever wanted after reading CAKE. Thank you J. Bengtsson for giving your readers their PERFECT follow-up book to Jake and Casey’s Love Story! I loved, loved, ❤️ this book! I wish I could give it more than just 5 Stars 🌟⭐️🌟⭐️🌟! The CAKE series is one of my all time favorite series. I hope we are treated to more books in the CAKE series and more books from this author!

I've read them all....and if you haven't read the first book you are missing a bunch of what makes Casey perfect for Jake to form "Cake". Casey is wonderful in ways Jake deserves. Jake is perfect (famous rockstar) except he isn't.

These books are a must read. If you love strong women who partner with their soul mate. You laugh, you cry, but you will appreciate the life of those whose life is changed by horrible life experiences...and everyone is effected....just how?! wow.

You'll enjoy their families. The author is brilliant in getting you right there at the moments and propelling you along in their lives.

Humor is first rate. Horror is real and in this book it's fairly minor. And the balance between life and death is dealt in such a beautiful way. I'll read again many times.

Can we have a Kyle or Quinn book??

Cake: The Newlyweds is a continuation of the first book Cake. Now I did skip ahead a few books because I really wanted to read this one so badly here. I fell in love with Jake and Casey. It starts out with seeing our two lovebirds enjoying being newly married and all twitter patted. For Jake and Casey, life couldn't be better. Jake is busy with his tours, and Casey has a great job that she is loving . We see them get married and go on a delicious honeymoon. But as life starts to settle down for the both of them, disaster strikes and grief overtakes them and our pair will need to learn to rely their love to get them through the tough times.

I have to say that even though there are some tough issues that are introduced into this story, it was more hilarious than book one and that one was pretty funny at times. But here, oh my goodness, I laughed out loud at work so many times they probably thought I was crazy loco. From Jake's father scaring him on the eve before his wedding about the honeybee queen making her mates testicles explode (pretty sure that is probably a true fact), to Jake scaring his bride to be on their wedding day to their niece and nephew scaring them enough to think twice about having kids....just another day at the office right? But seriously this book totally had me laughing pretty much every chapter. I just couldn't get enough. And yes it was a delight to see that Casey is the "boss" of the pair. She has Jake wrapped around her finger and played jokes on him all the time and it was so fun to see them after their HEA, dealing with hardship but also enjoying each other too.

-- AUDIO REVIEW --

Balancing the perfect blend of humor, heartfelt emotion, with just a small serving of darkness, this book was everything I’ve come to expect from this author over the course of this fantastic series.

I adored it. I loved catching back up with Casey and Jake, and watching their relationship grow deeper and more solid. I loved seeing their growth and their commitment to their love. It was just beautiful. Heartbreaking. Sometimes brutally so. But gosh, so stunningly beautiful.

Another solid five star audio experience for me. I’m hooked on this author forever now. She’s never getting rid of me! ~ Shelly, 5 Stars

PERFECTION!! Jake and Casey’s story has finally come full circle and it was just as beautiful and captivating and brimming with emotion as the first book, if not more. I adored every single second of it, most especially the last few chapters. This book not only made me swoon and fall in love all over again with Jake McKallister, but it also made me see and understand better the entirety of his story. Of everything that truly happened to him during that horrific kidnapping. I loved the fact that even through The Theory of Second Best and Fiercely Emma, we still got more bits and pieces of Jake’s story, but in the perspective of his siblings.

Cake might’ve ended with a happily ever after—and you might think, why do we even need another book for these two if we already got an HEA?—but that book still left some secrets unrevealed and questions unanswered. And Cake: The Newlyweds ties all of that up remarkably. I just loved seeing Jake and Casey deal with things together as a couple, no matter how good or bad the situation is. It definitely showed more of their relationship’s strength and stability, and their beaming compatibility. And no, this book isn’t just about these two getting hitched—it’s absolutely so much more. Hell, I’d even go so far as to say that you’d be surprised at how much you didn’t know you needed this.

Cake (both books) is, without a doubt, an unforgettable rockstar romance that exceeded all my expectations. This series is an absolute must read and I highly recommend that you read all the books in order to get the full experience of Jake McKallister’s gut-wrenching tale of hope, love and healing, and his fun, admirable and resilient family. It’s well beyond worth it and you’ll just find yourself wanting so much more once you’ve reached the end.

The fourth book in the Cake series, this is the second book for Jake and Casey, the couple from book #1, Cake, following their story beyond the happy ending we saw for them in their first book, and it’s a beautiful opportunity to revisit this gorgeous couple.

From Jake’s tragic and traumatic childhood, he has overcome so much to heal, become a huge rock star and find the love of his life. They’ve been through a lot together, and we get the perfect beginning to this book as we watch them finally get married. It’s funny and romantic, and all the things I would expect, and it’s so gorgeous to see! We see them settling into life together, navigating the challenges of Jake’s career and finding what works for them, and they look set for a picture-perfect life together.

But Jake is still plagued by demons from his past. And Casey’s world is about to implode. It’s a rough ride for these two as they face up to the unimaginable and try to get through it all. They support and lean on each other, and sometimes they don’t, and this is a realistic representation of a couple dealing with grief, tragedy and heartwrenching pain, doing what they can to keep pushing through. And they love each other through it all, never doubting their connection or their relationship, and I loved seeing them work through the hard times to get back to their happy.

Jake and Casey continue to be effortlessly entertaining, full of fun, teasing and playfulness, and so much love, I love them so much! We get to see lots of their families, and I love the close bonds and wonderful dynamics between them all. There are laughs and tears, and lots of sweet, fun moments for Jake and Casey, and their family and friends, and I loved being back with this group as we get to share so many key life moments with them.

A gorgeous read, and a treat for fans of the series – 4 stars.

Even though it’s been years since I first read Cake, it still stands as one of my all time favorites. That means getting more Jake and Casey was like someone handing me chocolate, tequila (so wine lovers, I prefer tequila), and the library from beauty and the beast all at once. I was just a little excited. Obviously. I love these two so hard. Still full of that sarcasm and wit that keeps me cracking up and the irresistible romance between Casey and Jake, there’s a deeper more emotional story that kicked me right in the feels.

I don’t think I’ll ever get enough of this couple. Even with one being a rockstar, Casey and Jake are one of the most real and relatable couples I’ve ever read. With their twisted sense of humor they don’t have a perfect romance, but they do have a real one that is so heart warming you can’t help but fall in love too. Even with all the emotions I felt while reading this I loved every second of it.

5 Roller Coaster Worthy Electrical p for Cake: The Newlyweds

Like all of the other books in this series, The Newlyweds is a beautiful ride of heart wrenching agony and hold your sides tears of laughter. To me, this is not a standalone - at the very least you need to have read Cake: A Love Story. I recommend the others as well, not only for the insight into the trauma of Jake's childhood, but for the frolicking laughter and the sweet love stories of Kyle and Emma.

It feels like it would be entirely too easy to fall into spoiler territory here, and that's the last thing I want to do. I will admit that the state both Casey and Jake as it begins was a bit alarming, but it won't take long for everything to fall into place and make you remember all the reasons you love this story and series. There are moments of heartbreak, moments of riotous laughter, and just a perfect representation of the human condition in all its glory and flaws.

Good listen. Story 4 stars. Narration 5 stars because of Andi Arndt. And Joe Arden was good too. If you haven’t read Cake yet, you really need to because this is a true sequel and there are things you need to know before this book is read.

Loved the characters as usual and I enjoyed catching up with everyone from all of the other books. This one was a bit darker this time around. And that was okay. Life is more than just rainbows and unicorns.

Recommended to adult contemporary romance readers. Especially ones that love a good rocker romance with an edge of sadness at times.

This book is everything I expected and everything I surely did not expect.

Surprised right from the 1st chapter.
The twists and turns, the pause, laugh out loud, cry a river, curse the author. You have all these and much more in this book.

Strongly suggest to read or listen to the previous 3 books before this so you catch up on the updates of all your favourite characters.

I love that J's books are always story told from both the main characters and has 2 epilogues. When you finish your story you know what both your lead characters are feeling.

Cake are such an adorable couple, my heart bleeds for all that they went through. Jake always a Phoenix rising from the ashes, picking himself up and making himself better for his Casey. And Casey the perfect bride any man can dream about, her devotion and love for her man is so amazing. She will move mountains for him and he would do the same for her. Their love is told beautifully by J.

You also get a glimpse of Keith & Sam, Kyle & Kenzie, Quinn & Gracie.
There is a huge change in the Caldwell family and they have a major role in this book. Syd & Riley will make you love them and want to hold them in a tight hug and say "we all love you".

J very subtly has left options open for the upcoming books and the cliffhanger where she leaves us makes me want to demand the next book right away.

I loved reading this as well as the previous 3 books. I recommend every romance reader to try J. Bengtsson if you have not tried already. She will surprise you in every book, there is no stereotype writing here. Its more like a story of someone she knows. Her books will definitely not disappoint you.

I loved the book, hope you like it too.

I love this series and listened to all of the previous audiobooks. When I learned that J. Bengtsson had written a fourth book that circles back to the original couple, Casey and Jake, I immediately thought "oh awesome novella"! Turns out it a full length book! I was also a wee bit apprehensive to listen to this because the first time around with Jake and Casey was so perfect, I didn't want to be let down.

I did enjoy this audiobook overall! We got to hang out with the awesome McKallister family (love them) and got some to be there for some things like the wedding and the honeymoon and their life afterwards. Again, I liked and enjoyed the listen. However, I had a bit of an issue with the beginning... there's a bit of a jump in "timeline" and you're wondering what the heck is happening and why is Casey behaving the way she is. We learn lots of stuff as we listen to the book. With that said, there were a LOT (way to much IMHO) of instances where Casey shares with us her thoughts on how gorgeous, sexy, incredibly irresistible Jake is. Whether this is the first book in the series you read or if you've read all of the books in the series, one thing Casey does best is tell us how damn sexy, hot, gorgeous Jake is! I mean, I get it.... the man is FINE!! This felt like a filler in many instances and it felt a bit like a drag to the story as well. I found myself NOT devouring the audiobook or unable to put it down. It took me MUCH longer to finish this title than the previous books in the series and that left me feeling meh during the listen. During this part of the book, Casey's behavior was 'not her usual' and seemed off. We later learn why and we get a better understanding but

The good news is that as the book progress it gets better and what we're used (great bantering, moving storyline, plot that progress, etc.) re-emerges and all the reasons we love the series returns.

The Narrators:
OMG - they freaking rock! Truly kept this book going for me during the "meh" parts. Their performance conveyed the emotions the author was writing into each of the characters and story. Joe's performance of Jake was spot on! His comedic timing superb and heart wrenching when needed.

Overall I enjoyed this installment though I think it could have been much better without the fillers. It may have been great if it was a novella or a shorter book. I do hope J. Bengtsson writes a few more books with the remaining McKallister family. I believe the majority of readers/listeners will love it.

July 2023: My rating for this read through would probably be around 3 stars, so I’m dinging this a star. (5 stars down to 4.) The name change of Jake’s kidnapper was fixed in this book (or rather, it was fixed in book one) so they match. But one other name still changed at the end of the book. Idk why it wasn’t caught along with a lot of other errors. 🤷🏻‍♀️

What I enjoyed this time around:

▪️Jake’s bachelor party! 🎉🦸🏼‍♂️
▪️Jake’s resilience and ability to face his past. (Even though it was shoved into the background because of the other stupid storyline.)
▪️I always love it when the McKallisters get together as a family, but there were also laughs with the Caldwells (Casey’s family) as well.
▪️More of Lassen!
▪️Jake’s epilogue!

What I didn’t enjoy this time around:

▪️Casey. I liked her much better in book one.
▪️The whole side story of felt forced and like it didn’t fit.
▪️I wish JB had spent more time with Jake facing and overcoming his past instead of what amounted to barely over a chapter. Had the events mentioned above not been inserted, this could have been given the page time it deserved. 😡
▪️Casey’s niece Sydney. I didn’t like her in book one, and I found her even more intolerable in this book. Bratty kids aren’t enjoyable in books regardless of their circumstances.
▪️Timeline errors!!! This drives me up a wall!
▪️The sex scenes. JB doesn’t write sexy sex scenes. They’re cheesy and ridiculous. I ended up skipping a couple.

Update for my second read through:
(Apparently this isn’t the end of the series and Keith gets a book with Rogue Wave.) I still really loved this book, but was irked by a couple of characters’ name changes within the series/book. I would like to see Luke get his own book. He really deserves his own HEA.

ORIGINAL THOUGHTS: Strong finish for this series! So many tears, but so many laughs. I will miss Casey & Jake and their families.

I’m sorry, I really wanted to love the continuation of Jake & Casey’s love story but I just didn’t. I’m a bit jaded when it comes to weddings...I really don’t like them. So, when the first quarter of the book is wedding related I just lose interest.
There was serious foreshadowing in the first chapter and I kept reading into every character...is this the one that somethings going to happen to? Do I bother getting invested more just for something bad to happen?
As much as I loved the first book in this series I just couldn’t stay interested in this one.

While this started somewhat slowly, it picked up and galloped right off into comedic territory. There are some serious issues here that get addressed - but so many of the scenes were just laugh out loud funny. Joe Arden handled the narration so well; these scenes wouldn't have been nearly so entertaining without his excellent narration.

Andi Arndt also added some spicy snark to the lively banter between Casey and Jake. All in all, this was a great read and the perfect conclusion to Jake and Casey's story.

I'm writing my review for Cake: The Newlyweds by J. Bengtsson on three hours of sleep. I fell asleep reading it and I woke up determined to finish it, not wanting to put it down made that easy. I'm in love with Jake and Casey and getting the continuation of their story had me feeling complete. I'm hoping that y'all have read the first book Cake: The Love Story and were introduced to this funny, sexy and very much in love couple. They have ghost from the past and life's unexpected moments that can tear them apart.

In this story we get to know more about Casey and all of her quirkiness and we find out about Jake's tragic past and the demons that follow him. I was blown away with their wedding, honeymoon and their life as newlyweds. I laughed at the cutesy moments of family bonding and I felt the pain of loss and heartbreak. Casey broke my heart, but her love for all those she loves and especially Jake is the strength they will all need. Jake's struggle to open up and face his past pulled at my heartstrings, he's strong but stronger when he has Casey beside him.

I love everything about this story, I love both families and the storyline. The writing is so good that I was able to feel as if I was there experiencing the good times and the hard times right along with every character in this story. I found this to be an emotional read, I even talked to my husband about it as if these characters were a couple of friends. I will be crossing fingers and hoping for more from this author and all the other family members.

Cake: The Newlyweds (Cake Book 4) by J. Bengtsson

I was so looking forward to reading this book and right now I don’t even want to write a review. So I’ll be brief. I didn’t really enjoy this at all. I found this follow-up to Jake and Casey’s story very underwhelming and oftentimes, boring. I wish the author had just left their story where it had ended and given us snippets of the characters throughout the other books of the series. I didn’t particularly like Casey or her thoughts and actions in The Newlyweds while Jake had most of my sympathies. There were bits of humor and sadness here and there... parts that actually made me feel something other than boredom, hence the 2 stars.

While this book is a definite miss for me, I still look forward to other books in the Cake series.

*arc received in exchange for honest review.

Gah, i love this series so bad!!

Jake and Casey are just such a wonderful couple to read about.
As usual this book is laugh out loud at points and close to tears in others.

I was so glad that Jake managed to get his Happy Ever After as what he went through when he was young was so sad.

Casey was just as fun as ever, and i want to be part of the family, her mother talking to Luke about his sexual habits is hilarious.

I would suggest that you read all of the books in the series before getting to this one to truly appreciate the awesomeness of this series.

If you haven’t started this series yet, it is really best to go back to the start and do a binge read of all four books. Sometimes it is the best way to get the full effect of everything going on. This one especially because you will want to experience how these two fell in love before they actually become newlyweds.

I am glad that there was a fourth book to bring the series to an end and have it come full circle, starting where it all began, at a wedding. To me it was like I was attending a family gathering. I was excited to catch up with these characters again and to see what they had been up to. And with every family shindig, you are delighted to see the clan, compare tales, some a little long winded than others, but when the event comes to a close, and you don’t want it to finish. You want to cling on and not ever say goodbye.

I am also glad with how it all wrapped up. Little snippets of the siblings was fun to see, and mostly had me giggling, especially if it was about Kyle. Love him and Kenzie brings another side to his persona. I think I was most glad that Jake found some peace with his demons and this can only be positive with his future with Casey. I have no idea what is next for this author, but I know I’ll want to read it.

*I am grateful for the copy provided by the author for my honest opinion.

I love Cake series, the only thing I didn't like was the beginning, (is written in media res) because I didn't get Cassey the last time I read about her I felt so related and suddenly I was like WTF is going on with her? haha
But if you keep reading you can understand where she's coming from, I absolutely related to her in some scenes I won't mention in order to save you from my spoiling lol
