Each year, in the weeks leading up to Earth Day (April 22nd) CEJS, in partnership with various Seattle University departments and student groups, encourages action and participation in initiatives that focus on the urgent need for environmental justice, sustainable development, and climate solutions. Description: For Earth Month 2024, the environmental justice student club Sustainable Student Action (SSA) is organizing an educational series focused on the practices by the Coca Cola Company with three events (April 9, 16, and 23). To kick off their series, they invite all to join for the screening of Mark Thomas's documentary on Coca-Cola. "Mega-corporation-free" snacks and drinks will be served! Description: Join Seattle University for this year's Mission Day which will feature renowned speaker Robin Wall Kimmerer, author of Braiding Sweetgrass. Description: Confronted with growing environmental threats, a better understanding of the critical connection between people and nature is key to informing effective decision making for the Common Good. Many contemporary philosophers and great thinkers have been saying for decades that humanity is arriving to the end of an era philosophically, ecologically, politically, psychologically, cosmologically, scientifically, and so forth. The complex issues we are facing require new perspectives and new ways of thinking. In this Red Talk, Professor Rodriguez offers her insights from her social location as a “border” theologian. Description: Calling all campus members: We welcome you to volunteer in work parties on SU campus to support the organically and pesticide-free maintained urban gardening efforts lead by the SU Grounds team. Grounds has planned a new planting design beneficial to pollinators that will beautify and create interest for the surroundings of the Wildlife garden and the Union Green. New plantings for 2024, including trees for Arbor Day (April 26), are planned for volunteers to work with Grounds during April, Earth Month. Want to come and help out? Please join us at any of the days/times listed above. Minimum requested volunteering time: 2 hours. Description: This is the 2nd event in an Earth Month series about the Coca Cola company, organized by the environmental justice student club Sustainable Student Action (SSA). In this event, SSA will be discussing how Coke exploits people and the environment. Come learn how child labor, violence, racism, and war profiteering are part of your favorite beverage company. Description: The annual Joseph A. Maguire, SJ Campus Ministry Lecture brings the community together to share a meal and conversation. The dinner is a venue to engage our students, alumni, faculty, staff and community partners in dialogue around current justice issues through the lens of faith. This year's lecture will feature Em Wright, M.A., of Seattle University School of Arts & Sciences, speaking on the topic: "Grounding in Connection: Reframing the Climate Crisis through Relationship." Description: Join us for the 5th edition of Earth Talks, Seattle University’s annual showcase of 5-minute sustainability-focused presentations by students, staff, faculty, and community partners. This year’s keynote speaker is Jessyn Farrell, Director of the Office of Sustainability and Environment (OSE) at the City of Seattle. The event’s theme is "Care for our Common Home" .
All speakers will attend in person, but audience members can attend VIRTUALLY BY ZOOM. Zoom details will be provided closer to the event date on the Earth Talks website: www.earth-talks.org.

Description: Come pick up a beautiful plant at the Student Center! Hosted by Engineers for a Sustainable World, our annual plant sale is back boasting a wide range of plants from a local nursery. Students will be able to purchase indoor plants on campus to raise money for sustainability projects led by ESW and increase student sustainability awareness at Seattle University. Description: Join Green Seattle Partnership for Earth Day along the Duwamish River, at one of the Duwamish Tribe's sacred sites and important salmon habitat for the juvenile salmon on their way now to Puget Sound. Green Seattle Partnership will be revitalizing a bed for planting native plants important to the Salish Tribes by removing weeds and shrubs and mulching along with light weeding along the river bank. The event also includes a special welcome from the Duwamish Tribe, special speakers and environmental tabling.
